Google Rebrands NotebookLM: The Rise of Gemini Notebook

July 16, 2026 // admin

Google has officially announced a major shift for its popular AI research tool, rebranding NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook. This move marks the tool’s transition from an experimental project into a core component of the broader Gemini ecosystem. Despite the name change, Google has confirmed that the tool will remain a standalone product dedicated to research and topic organization.

A New Level of Productivity

The rebranding brings with it a suite of powerful “agentic” capabilities. For users with an Ultra subscription, Gemini Notebook now leverages Gemini 3.5 and a background cloud computer. This allows the AI to perform complex tasks like writing code based on your uploaded sources. Perhaps most significantly, the tool can now generate and output files directly in the chat, including PDFs, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and PNG images. While these features were initially exclusive to Ultra users, they are scheduled to roll out to all Pro users on the web over the coming weeks.

Improved Organization and Integration

To help users manage their research more effectively, Google is introducing several highly requested organizational features. Folders are slated to arrive very soon, addressing the top request from the user community. In the meantime, users can now pin notebooks to the top of their dashboard for quick access.

Another major quality-of-life update is the introduction of Google Drive autosync. Previously, users had to manually update imported documents, but now, any changes made to a Google Doc in your Drive will automatically reflect in your notebook sources. Furthermore, Gemini Notebook is being integrated into Google Search’s AI mode, making it more accessible across different Google platforms.

From “Project Tailwind” to Graduation

The history of Gemini Notebook is one of rapid growth. It began as “Project Tailwind,” an internal idea developed by a small group of Google employees. During development, the team considered naming it “Google Notebook,” but decided it was too early to give it such a prominent name on par with Google Maps or Google Keep. Instead, they chose “NotebookLM” as a middle ground. With this latest rebranding, the tool is seen as finally “graduating” into its permanent identity as a primary Google productivity tool.

This evolution highlights Google’s commitment to making Gemini Notebook a central hub for knowledge workers and researchers who need more than just a simple chatbot.
