For a long time, this site talked about Artificial Intelligence as if it were a ghost, a “cloud” of data floating somewhere above us, helping us write, work, and create. The truth is, AI is not invisible. It is made of steel, concrete, diverted rivers, and thousands of acres of cleared land.
I am an ordinary person who watches the world closely. Lately, I’ve been looking past the software updates and looking at the landscape. From the massive 40,000-acre “Stratos” project in the Utah desert to the quiet re-zoning of agricultural land in Florida, the digital age is currently in the middle of a physical “land rush” that mirrors the industrial expansions of the 1800s.
Why this site is changing:
There are plenty of places to find out which AI bot is the fastest and best. This isn’t one of them. AI Chatter News is shifting its focus to the “Ground Truth.” We will be asking the questions that often get buried in the fine print of local newspapers and county commission meetings:
- Where is the water coming from to cool these massive machines
- What happens to the migratory paths of birds when we fragment the scrub land with industrial campuses?
- How are “small people” and local communities standing up to developers with deep pockets?
This will be a continued conversation, posted two to three times a week. I’ll be diving into public records, tracking new legislation like Florida’s recent SB 484, and comparing today’s technological demands to historical events like the draining of the Everglades.
We fell into the habit of thinking the internet was weightless. It’s time we start looking closer at the cost.
